Dr Simon Fishel
Specialist in the field of fertility treatment
Dr Simon Fishel is Managing Director of the CARE Fertility Group. He is recognised for his pioneering work in IVF (link to ‘CARE Firsts’ on CARE Fertility website), especially in the fields of microinjection for male infertility and preservation of fertility in children with cancer and in developing chromosome screening in IVF using array CGH technology. He has been active in the field for over 30 years, researching at Cambridge with Professor Robert Edwards before the birth of the first IVF baby. He was part of the ‘original team of four’, with Patrick Steptoe, Bob Edwards and John Webster at the world first IVF clinic established in 1980. He has written over 200 scientific articles and edited three books on the subject. Dr Fishel was awarded a Personal Professorial Chair in Human Reproduction at the University of Nottingham in recognition of his work. Dr Fishel is an internationally acclaimed IVF scientist; having received many honorary awards from countries such as Japan, Austria, Italy, South Africa and the US, amongst others. In 1992 he founded the first Postgraduate degree course in IVF and ART, and he has advised several international Government committees reviewing policy and legislation on IVF, including advisors to the Vatican. In 2009 Simon was honoured by Liverpool John Moores University with their highest award of ‘University Fellow’ for “outstanding contribution to science and to humanity”. CARE Fertility have been associated with the introduction of many of the advanced and specialised technologies in IVF, and their patient Bulletin Board has been described as ‘one of the best patient-patient resources in the field’.
